Sashimono

Very rare in this design, a sashimono (battle standard) made of 6 horizontal strips of gold-lacquered cloth. On each strip is an ideogram. The top one reads "Shô), or JUSTICE. The fllowing ones read:

HACHIMAN-DAI-BO-SATSU

Hachiman was the god of war.

Original pole. Length: 168cm

Condition: v. good.

Note: while most sashimono were made of either silk or thin linen, the type sold here is far more rare and a few examples can be found on armours of very high-ranking lords, ie. in the Kozu Collection in Kyoto.
